Vikings used great boats, called longships, to travel through the seas of their time. Here Vikings have set sail towards another land. Gulls, soaring with the wind, escort the ships away from home. Can you see the mountains of their homeland growing smaller in the distance? Olav Tryggvason is seen here onboard Ormen Lange (the long worm), the largest longship of that time, on his way to the Battle of Svolder where he was killed in the year 1000. The ships' brightly colored sails surely struck terror into the hearts of those who saw them on the horizon.
