Gabrille Münter completed this Portrait of Marianne von Werefkin in 1909, eight years after moving to Munich to pursue artistic training.  Because she was not accepted to the Munchener Akademie due to her sex, she went to the Phalanz school, where she met Wassily Kandinsky.  They traveled to Murnau in 1908, which would prove decisive for the future of her artistic career.  This move caused Münter to move more toward abstractionism and  to bring together “simplified color shapes bounded by dark contour lines.”
